Bushnell Falcon

by Andy Gurzynski
(Moorestown, NJ)

The Bushnell Falcon binocular is a fairly low-end binocular product that is good for the amateur simply looking to magnify things around his/her home and not looking to spend too much.

The product is inexpensive, yet surprisingly rugged in construction, and if treated properly could last a considerable time.

The brand Bushnell is well respected in the entire field of optics and has been in this field for quite some time, and has produced a product at the lower end price point that is usually worth the money.

As mentioned, this is not a product for a professional or sophisticated amateur bird watcher or ranger or law enforcement person. This is strictly for someone that wants to see some thing up close once in a while and need not rely on outstanding performance. The case that comes with it is not that rugged and would not protect the instrument very well should it fall when hiking somewhere rough or in difficult terrain.

Focusing is done via the Insta Focus bar between the lenses and is intuitive to use. This user found it easy to focus for both objects near and far, even though his eye site is rather bad without correction.

The lenses are adjustable to fit young children up to large adults. This model has been seen on sale both on-line and at the local Sports authority. The color this user purchased was in basic black.

Field of view was quite good when viewing and the weight was manageable even when looking at things for extended periods.

Very sturdy but heavy
by: Mary S.

This spring I got a job as a wildlife technician and had to pick up a pair of binoculars so I could count grouse in pre-dawn light. After two failed attempts (helpful hint, never buy binoculars from WalMart) a lens literally fell out the first time I used the first one and the second was showed everything smeary no matter how many times I cleaned them) at finding the right binoculars, I got the Bushnell Falcon.

These binoculars are great! They focus quickly and easily and you can pick up more light through them than through the naked eye.

I haven't tried them in actual nighttime conditions (I didn't have a need to), but for early dawn they're great. The power was not great enough to read the bands on the birds I was watching, but then that wasn't what I was trying to do, I only had to count them.

One thing to keep in mind is that these are a pair of pretty large binoculars and so they are heavy. It didn't matter to me because I was sitting in one place when doing my watching, but if you're going to be tromping through the fields with them it's something to keep in mind. They're very sturdy and didn't mind being bounced around in the truck a little bit (unlike my previous two pair of binoculars) and my set even came with a convenient carrying case, although I'm not sure if that's offered with all binoculars of this model or not.

Overall, I would recommend this model of binoculars and Bushnell binoculars in general.

Don't make the mistake I did and try to get something cheap to save money - assess your needs and then buy the power of binoculars you need from a reputable company. It'll save you money and frustration in the end.

Geared towards beginners
by: Amy Stery

Bushnell Binoculars are known as a good brand, and the 9X-27X50 that I have is no exception. The view is sharp and clear, and it is easy to adjust. I've taken them camping and it's pretty amazing what you can see with a good pair of binoculars.

These are also great for stargazing when you're in an open area - telescopes aren't the only instruments that can look into the sky, binoculars work almost as well. My binoculars have a function called "insta focus" - it is an adjustor piece right in the middle of the binoculars - which lets you adjust the focus very quickly.

There is another lever on the right lens that gives a more precise adjustment. If you're watching wildlife, the insta focus is quick and easy to adjust, which you will need if you're trying to follow a living creature that moves quickly (like a bird or squirrel).

These are great to carry on a hike when you'll want to stop every once and a while and look at wildlife. If you have a big backyard and like to watch birds outside, keep them by the window so you can grab them the moment you see something interesting.

They came with four protective caps for the lenses, a carry bag and a carry strap. The carry bag that came with mine isn't very good - it is just cheap vinyl - so you'll want to make sure you store them safely or get a better bag.

These binoculars are geared towards beginners (perfect for me!) and I've been very pleased with them. If you're looking for a solid pair of entry level binoculars, these are a good pair.
