Digital Binoculars
Digital binoculars are still relatively new technology, with a constant stream of new "improved" models, but are a great innovation for gadget lovers!. The whole basis of the digital binoculars is the ability to combine standard binoculars with a digital camera thus creating a way to not only view but take high quality still photos, and with some models the potential to make videos!.
This breakthrough means that you are now able to view, take photos/videos download & share with friends & family for years to come.
Like all other things in life, with digital binoculars you very much "get what you pay for!", and as the magnifaction is set the same for both the camera & binoculars, it's very much a case of what you see is what you get!, which with just slight adjustments once downloaded will provide excellent results.
Digital binoculars are the perfect compromise, rather than taking expensive cameras & binoculars when you go hunting, Birding ,fishing, hiking, camping or for that matter ANY outdoor based activity or sport!, just take along good quality, good value digital binoculars, you will be amazed at the results, let alone the relief of not having to "lug around" extra un-neccessary equipment!.
What to look out for......
Here's a simple checklist that will help you choose the right digital binoculars for you:
* many models today offer LCD screens & instant replays, these are great to check the images/videos taken, to allow you to re-take if you are not happy with the results, so possibly the biggest bonus!.
* if you are wanting to buy digital binoculars with video capability, make sure they come with easy to install computer software, to ensure smooth downloading & editing on your home computer.
* a slot for a memory card to allow you to expand the memory is really useful, digital binoculars typically have 15-16MB included of onboard storage capabilities. This is really useful particularly if you intend to shoot videos, always purchase a spare memory card, they are not cheap, but provide you with greater control over the volume of photos & video you can store when you are on the move. Remember to keep "clearing down" the memory cards onto your home computers, as they the memory cards should only be used to store the latest photos & videos awaiting download!.
* choosing an optical zoom over a digital zoom is a good decision, digital zooms lower the resulting image quality.
* check out the "keypad" feature that is on many of the better digital binoculars, just make sure that its suitable & not too awkward to operate small fiddly keys!.
* daft as it might sound, check that the digital binoculars ACTUALLY fit your eyes!, I know, I hear you say "thats just commonsense", but commonsense does not always prevail when you are hunting for something that you desire badly!!. Its also very important as most digital binoculars do not have moveable viewfinders.
* multicoated lenses are better than just coated lenses.
* choosing the amount of megapixels you want in the camera can be a nightmare, but if you just work to the simple rule that the higher the megapixels the bigger & better photo results you will get. If you are just wanting standard email quality up to photo album results then choose a camera with 0.3 to 3 megapixels, they will deliver perfectly respectable images.
* the range of different magnifications available in most digital binoculars tends to be 7x to 10x which is perfectly suitable for most short to medium range shots.
* if you anticipate wanting to use your digital binoculars in shaded, lower light places such as forests, at sunset or even in concert halls choose as larger lenses as possible, as the larger the lenses, the more light is allowed into the binoculars & camera.
* some digital binoculars also include "auto focus", this is a great feature if you just want to "point, view & shoot" but just take the time to ensure that option suits you best.
* tripods are also available as an extra accessory with several models & is a useful addition if you tend to get "shakey hands", as this is possibly the biggest negative point, digital binoculars tend to over emphasize in their results any shakiness that exists when holding & shooting.
Digital binoculars are a great step forwards, take the time to choose the set that is right for you, the reward will be great memories to share for years to come!.
A few ideas on digital binoculars brand choices......
Without a shadow of a doubt Bushnell Binoculars are the "kings" of digital binoculars, they offer a wide range, with many different permutations, options & accessories, and are the preferred choice of the professionals!.
There are several other brands that also compete in this highly lucrative sector of the binoculars market such as Barska, Celestron, Carson, Konus & Meade but personally I would not choose anything other than a Bushnell's model.
