Reviews of some of the better giant military binoculars ...
Binoculars have been used for military purposes since the beginning of the nineteenth century.
Whether for spying out the land for enemies, or searching the sky for enemy planes, binoculars have gained a well-deserved place in military tactics.
Built to last, they're more durable than binoculars designed for civilian purposes, and manufactured to resist extreme weather conditions.
You'll also come across special features in military binoculars that are not always present in the civilian equivalent, such as filters designed for blocking laser beams, and devices designed for range estimations.
Many giant binoculars originally designed for military purposes are now available to civilians - should you wish to pay the high price tag.
Popular giant military binoculars include Steiner 15x80, Steiner 20x80, Oberwerk 25-40x100, Fujinon 25x150 and Fujinon 40x150.
Read their reviews ... the first three models are approximately in the $1-2,000 price range ... the last two considerably more expensive.
Steiner 15x80
Originally developed for military and border patrol purposes, these tough, rubber-armored binoculars are easy-to-use, comfortable, with a clear image and superior low-light performance.
They're also waterproof and fogproof.
Although a tripod is included, you'll find them particularly low-weight compared to similar products, and light enough to be hand-held.
Other traits include a stabilized compass, and a range reticle inside its mechanisms for determining longer distances.
Steiner 20x80
Once again, originally developed for military control, this model is popular amongst law enforcement users.
Their huge magnification makes any target appear close, their excellent low-light performance being an added advantage.
Tough and waterproof, they can be mounted on a tripod but are light enough to be hand-held.
Oberwerk 25-40x100
Once only available to East German and Chinese military, these zoom binoculars can now be purchased by civilians ... and they receive excellent reviews.
Their optics are fully multi-coated, and they come complete with tripod, mount and case.
However, they are not waterproof or fogproof.
Fujinon 25x150
The incredible magnification on this model just about sums it all up.
But, its equally incredible price tag will prevent most of the general public from purchasing it.
Fully coated with a special new Electron Beam Coating (EBC) process, their image is superbly clear, sharp and bright.
With a warranty of just one year, plus its considerable price, these excellent binoculars represent a good choice only for true professionals.
Fujinon 40x150
These Fujinon Binoculars offer an even greater performance than the previous binoculars.
Similarly designed, but with a magnification of 40, it scores higher in both performance and price, and is more suited for specialist purposes than general usage.
Capable of capturing light - even when looking at great distances - their electronic beam coating guarantees quality of image.
Giant military binoculars are certainly not designed for everyone.
But, if you're a professional, with a special purpose in view, money spent on these top-of-the-line products will not be in vain.
