Olympus 8 x 21DPC I

by Big E

The Olympus 8 x 21DPC I model binoculars are by far some of the best compact binoculars that I have found. The clarity is picture perfect at medium ranges and it focuses almost independently, there is a little focusing for those who use glasses (it is better to use them without glasses).

These compact beauties easily fit into a carry bag without having to find additional items to take out to make room, for those who choose to wear baggy clothing when out watching wildlife will find these easy to carry and use. The weight and compactness also make these perfect for attending sporting events, as they can easily be put into a purse or a pocket.

They have the classic Olympus look, gray and black, with gray rubber eye pieces. The eye pieces don’t conform to your eyes like some super high end model, but they aren’t uncomfortable either. They also show a field of 6.4 degrees to get a maximum field of vision from such a small piece of equipment. These features are highlighted by having a UV protection to aid in preventing eye fatigue. Again these binoculars have an unsurpassed image, combine that with being truly portable and lightweight and they are perfect for almost any outing.

These binoculars come with a small lined carrying case (with a belt loop), it also comes with two eye piece covers to keep dust out. The eye piece covers unfortunately are a little difficult to keep track of, and normally seem to disappear shortly after purchase.

Compact, lightweight, great for travelling
by: Nevin

The Olympus 8x21 DPC- I is one of the smallest most compact pocket-size binoculars that you can take with you almost anywhere. I purchased this model as a secondary set of binoculars I could carry on my person while travelling, ready to be used at a moment?s notice.

The binoculars are 8x21 reverse porroprism design, this means you get 8x magnification (6.4 degrees field of view) with a 21mm lens ? which is rather decent for a compact pair of binoculars. The Olympus comes standard with a compact soft case with a belt attachment that makes it very convenient to carry on your person.

The optics are UV coated and rather effective while using outdoors in bright sunlight. The binoculars sit comfortably in the palms of your hand despite its small size, I have never had any problem gripping them, and the grey rubber body grips add to both looks and functionality. Image quality and optics are good, and there is no significant tradeoffs apparent as far as optics are concerned, which is usually the case with compact binoculars.

For those that wear glasses, the eye caps can be folded in which is a thoughtful addition, however I usually take-off my glasses while using binoculars and the Olympus? rubber eye pieces are soft and comfortable on the eyes.

On the negative side, the lens caps are poorly designed and ill-fitting; I lost mine when they fell off within 3-4 days of purchase. Also the body has only one loop for attaching the wrist/neck strap which I find rather awkward while hanging around my neck, which is why I prefer using the belt case.

Other than these minor issues, I find that the Olympus 8x21 DPC-I is compact, lightweight and definitely good value for money.
