Orion Scenix 10x50 Wide-Angle

by Brian
(California)

Orion's Scenix 10x50 Wide-Angle Binoculars are an excellent value for their price. Coming in at less than $100, they provide features rarely seen in binoculars at this price point. They feature large 50mm apertures, 10x magnification and a 7 degree field of view.

Although these features may be found in other sets at this price point, what sets the Scenix apart is the quality of construction. The metal body of this set secures the optics, and is coated in a rubberized exterior, which makes for a very rugged frame. All optical surfaces are multi-coated, which not only protects them but gives the set exceptional image clarity, not only for astronomical use, but also for terrestrial viewing.

All the optical components are of high grade material, and the anti-reflection coatings do not add any tint to the image.

All moving components are very stable and move smoothly without catching, and although the focus knob moves easily, it has no tendency to drift. They have an eye relief of 12mm, providing an easy view, however, due to the large magnification, the small exit pupil of 5mm can occasionally cause problems.

Although the case is rugged, it is not waterproof, nor weather coated. Care needs to be taken to make sure that they stay dry, and, in cold conditions, allowing the binoculars to adjust to the ambient temperature will help with condensation.

Although the wide aperture makes these binoculars good for astronomical use, the high magnification can cause hand shaking to become very apparent. If you plan to use these at night, you may want to consider a tripod. For daytime viewing, shake usually isn't a problem.

Altogether, this is an excellent set of binoculars, especially for the price. With a metal body, multi-coated lenses, and a wide 7 degree field of view at 10x magnification, this set packs many features not often found in binoculars for this price. The Scenix 10x50 is an excellent set of optics, for an excellent value.
