Orion UltraView 8x42

by Brent
(New York, NY USA)

Orion binoculars draw upon the heritage of Orion Telescopes. Known for quality at a reasonable price, the Orion UltraView 8x42 delivers both. The UltraView is a wide angle binocular that offers 8x magnifications through a 42mm lens so you can really take in the scenery. It’s very compact, weighing less than 2 pounds and only 5 inches high.

The body is covered in a black rubber over alloy metal which makes it easy to grip and hang on to. The rubber also acts as a scratch and dent deterrent which helps to keep it looking brand new. Included is a soft shell case, lens caps and a neck strap. It also has an adapter mount so you can mount it on a tripod.

I chose this particular brand and model after being very satisfied with their telescopes and doing some research on what Orion offers for binoculars. I had two requirements. First, I wanted a binocular that was small and easily portable.

I use it mainly for scenery and the UltraView is small enough to take anywhere. Secondly, I needed eye cups that would be friendly for sunglasses. The eye cups on the UltraView are rubber wrapped and retractable so you can leave your glasses or sunglasses on while viewing.

Living in the northeast, we have varied weather from near zero in the winter to high heat and humidity in the summer. The UltraView has always provided a consistent view without any type of distortion or fogging. Viewing is clear and crisp, even when doing close ups. It’s not waterproof, however, so you need to be careful.

There are a lot of other binoculars on the market that are cheaper and more expensive than the UltraView. But in my opinion, the UltraView strikes a great balance in between.
